This post is brought to you by Spin Cycle and this week’s assignment – Creative Writing. See Sprite’s Keeper for more Creative Spins.
I about croaked when I saw Sprite’s Keeper’s Spin Cycle for this week. I don’t have a creative bone in my body, much less the ability to write a story or poem or even an interesting sentence. Initially, I thought I’d just skip this week’s spin, but then I remembered that I do have something creative. His name is The Boy.
Following is a sample of The Boy’s creative writing. He wrote this in the 5th grade.
An Unforgettable Day by The BoyI galloped through the bluebonnet field in Texas chasing after my cousin. Flower petals flew behind us drifting in the glistening sky that was slowly dimming. I was so close to my cousin Zackary that I could grab his shirt. I did and we both fell one halfway on top of the other, tasting the moist dirt in our mouths.
Now Zack and I were walking to a checkered black and red blanket set out for a picnic. On the blanket there were hot dogs just off the grill, crackers with moist cheese and lemonade that will tickle your taste buds as it dribbles down your throat like a yellow river.
My family had full bellies after that yummy meal and soon the adults broke out with a warm conversation so only the kids remained. We lay on our backs and watched the mocking birds nuzzle their young. Soon I wandered away to see what an eerie glow was behind a tree. I froze in my tracks!
It was a beautiful sunset that was so bright I had to squint my eyes to look at it. The luminous colors of the rainbow shown off into the misty air and were surrounded by a deep red background. That was the end of a beautiful day and the start of a star filled night.
At first they started out as little specks in the sky and got bigger and brighter. I walked to the beat of the cicadas as the great stars of Texas lit my path to the car. Now in the car, I could have sworn the bluebonnets, bent in the mellow breeze, were waving farewell as I drove off.
That was the end of an unforgettable day. From the bright sunset to the singing cicadas, that was definitely a fabulous day.
5th grade? There’s some talent there! I love his use of words. You’re linked!
Wow! What a great creative story by the boy. He takes after someone I know?
He wrote that in fifth grade? You’ve got a Pulitzer winner on your hands!
GREAT story! I know adults who don’t write nearly as well as The Boy!
Thanks! Spell check is heaven for The Boy. He can barely spell his name! He writes well when he takes his time, other times – it’s an awful mess! LOL.
Great story by the Boy. It has a lot of good descriptions and reflects upon the beauty that he saw.
Thank you for stopping by. If you want a copy of my story– I have it as a Word file. Just e-mail me and I can send it to you if you like.
Thanks again for sharing
Fifth grade?? That’s amazing!!

WOW! That was awesome. I can’t believe he wrote that so young. Beautiful use of words.
@Jan – I know you read a blog everyday by someone who doesn’t write that well. *wink*
WOW! He wrote that in the fifth grade? *Impressive*!
What a great way to spin it! Thanks for sharing this with us. I remember the thrill of writing in elementary school—now, it’s more dread than anything else.
Fifth grade? That’s amazing and no wonder you are so proud.
He wrote that in the 5TH GRADE?! What an amazing talent! Is he going to be an author? His writing is so descriptive-absolutely amazing! If you raised him, I’m thinking that you’re more creative than you’re giving yourself credit for!
What a fantastic job, The Boy! You are quite the writer. I can’t wait for you to publish your first novel.
